AEM Cold Air Intake System for 1.9L VW Jetta & Golf TDI – Install Videos

May 2, 2012

In this two part installation video, we show you how to take the stock intake filter from your 1.9L VW Jetta or Golf TDI and replace it with an AEM Cold Air Intake.  Specifically, one that moves your intake filter out of the engine compartment and down into the wheel well, making it a true diesel cold air intake. Relocating the filter out of the stock location allows you to get cooler air inlet temperatures, and improved diesel performance is all about a better combustion event, achievable with a cooler, denser, more oxygen-rich air intake charge.

AEM diesel intakes come with DryFlow filters that are washable and reusable, and do not need to be oiled after cleanings, making them convenient to maintain.

One thing to be aware of though when moving the air filter down into the wheel well – if you drive through water deep enough to suck water in through the filter, you’ll destroy your engine.  To overcome this obstacle, the diesel intake engineers at AEM offer a bypass valve.  This bypass valve shuts down induction through the filter whenever the filter becomes submerged.  Intake air is rerouted instead through the external diaphragm of the bypass valve.

We also recommend you add an AEM pre-filter to keep normal splashes of mud and water from saturating your intake filter.   The pre-filter is made of a durable micro-screen material and has been pre-treated with AEM’s proprietary hydrophobic process.  The combination of the pre-filter and the bypass valve gives you the protection you need.  Here’s a look at the pre-filter.
