2012 VW 2.0L TDI Cold Air Intake Kits

If you’ve recently purchased a 2012 VW Passat, Golf, or Jetta TDI, often the first thing you want to do is add different TDI performance upgrades.  The engineers at AFE Power developed one of our favorite, their Stage 2 Cold Air Intake for 2009-2012 2.0L TDI’s.

This cold air intake kit comes in your choice of one of three different filter media to choose from, all of which are washable and reusable.  If you prefer a filter that is oil free, the Pro Dry S Intake is built from two layers of randomly porous synthetic fabric.  With five layers of cotton gauze material, the Pro 5 R Intake has the highest flow rate of the three filters.  Providing the highest rate of filtration with 5 layers of cotton gauze as well as two layers of synthetic fabric, the AFE Pro Guard 7 TDI Intake is a new addition that is sure to be quite popular with TDI enthusiasts.

Choosing the Right Diesel Performance Exhaust System for Your Diesel Truck (part 1 of 2)

It’s widely known that upgrading your factory system to a performance diesel exhaust is a great way to increase your engine’s power and fuel economy.   Because of all the changes to stock emissions systems over the past few years, there now exists some confusion and questions among diesel owners as to which exhaust upgrade is the best option for them.   Parleys Diesel Performance wants to help you make an informed and educated choice, so let’s start by reviewing the basics.

Traditionally, light duty diesel truck factory exhaust systems were 3 inches or 3.5 inches in diameter, with crimped spots along the diesel exhaust system that hampered flow and robbed your vehicle of its true potential.   Installing a performance system to increase the diameter of your exhaust allowed your engine to expel exhaust gasses more efficiently, and mandrel bends gave your exhaust a true 4″ diameter.  Diesel trucks today come from the factory with catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters, even urea injection systems (also called SCR or selective catalytic reduction).  And 4 inch stock exhausts are commonplace.

So which exhaust should you choose for your truck?

If you have a “pre-DPF” diesel pickup (anything before the 2007.5 6.7L Cummins, 2008 6.4L Powerstroke, or 2007.5 Duramax LMM) the most common diesel exhaust upgrade is a four inch turbo back exhaust system.  The standard 4″ diameter will meet most people’s needs; however, if it’s your intention to upgrade your vehicle to a high horsepower level (think over 550HP), we recommend you invest in a 5″ diesel performance exhaust system. This will allow the larger amount of exhaust your high horsepower diesel creates to flow properly and keeping temperatures down.

In addition to figuring out the diameter of the exhaust system you want for your truck, there are also some other important choices to make.  Diesel exhaust systems come in four main materials: T-304 Stainless Steel (high-polish show finish quality), 409 Stainless Steel , Aluminized Steel (similar to your original stock exhaust), and different variations of Black Stainless or Black Aluminized Steel.   You also need to decide whether you want to have a muffler or not, and if you do choose a muffler, do you want one that is a high flow performance muffler or one that keeps your exhaust volume low.  The majority of Turbo-Back Exhausts come with high flow performance mufflers.  If you want a “straight pipe” exhaust, meaning no muffler, a popular choice is the no-muffler series from MBRP Performance Exhaust.  Their stainless steel SLM (Stainless Less Muffler) and PLM (Performance Less Muffler – this is aluminized steel)  are very competitively priced and work great.

Although less popular, catalytic converter or Cat-Back Diesel Exhausts allow you to upgrade the sound and flow of your exhaust and in some areas are necessary to keep your diesel street legal.

AFE Stage 2 SI Cold Air Intake Install Video: 2008 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

Parley’s Diesel Performance carries all the top brands of diesel intakes and diesel cold air filters like those from Advanced Flow Engineering, or AFE as they are commonly called.  Over the past few years AFE diesel intakes have become recognized as some of the best cold air intakes available.   Many AFE cold air intakes have an open or exposed filter element, but for certain vehicle applications AFE has designed an intake system with a fully enclosed filter.  A good example would be the sealed Ford diesel cold air intake for the 6.4L Powerstroke trucks built from 2008 through 2010.

AFE’s Stage 2 Si ( sealed intake) for the 6.4L Powerstroke shows signficant improvements in airflow and real power increases.  Dyno testing of the AFE Stage 2 Intake shows gains of 28 Horsepower and 54 ft. lbs. of Torque at 2000 RPM.  That’s a pretty significant increase in power to a truck that already makes big numbers from just adding a cold air intake system.  The increase in airflow is also improved by 41% over the stock airbox, pushing an additional 65 CFM (stock is about 160 CFM).

The AFE Stage 2 Si intakes also help maintain a factory appearance by utilizing a fully sealed commercial grade air box that replaces the entire OEM air box.  Part of what makes this particular Stage 2 Si unit so effective is the use of a built in ram-air scoop which forces more cold air into the filter area.  And last but not least, like with all true diesel performance intakes, adding a large, conical filter with pleated ridges increases the surface area of the filter, allowing for more air to be filtered more quickly.

2011 2.0L VW Jetta TDI Exhaust System Upgrade

Parley’s Diesel Performance is pleased to announce that AFE has released their stainless steel Catalytic Converter-Back exhaust system for the 2011 Jetta TDI.  AFE had previously made available the same style system for the 2011 Golf 2.0L TDI exhaust and all the early reviews on that system have been positive, so we expect good things for 2011 Jetta TDI owners who choose this system to upgrade their cars.

The exhaust note is a bit throatier than stock, and the dual 3 inch double-walled polished T-304 Stainless steel tips look really clean and aggressive.  The exhaust system is fully mandrel-bent as you would expect, and the hangers line up well for a good clean installation.

Many cat-back diesel exhaust systems don’t require any cutting of the stock pipes for installation, but this kit does.   It’s impossible to clear the rear axle when removing the OEM exhaust without making the cut.  We just wanted you to know.  If you’re interested in upgrading the performance of your 2011 Jetta TDI (including Sportwagens), we recommend pairing this TDI exhaust upgrade with AFE’s 2.0L Jetta TDI Intake system and a 2011 TDI Performance Module from Diesel Power.

One last note – this exhaust system is legal in all 50 U.S. states because it retains all of your emissions control equipment.

2011 VW Jetta & Golf TDI Performance Cold Air Intake Upgrade

Parley’s Diesel Performance is pleased to announce that Advanced Flow Engineering (AFE) has given the go ahead for their VW TDI performance cold air intake kit on the 2011 2.0L Jetta and Golf.  Advertised dyno results are showing an increase of 10 Horsepower at 3150 RPM and a nice torque increase of 23 foot lbs. at 3050 RPM.  This is the same cold air intake that we’ve had great success with over the past year and a half on the 2009 and 2010 2.0 Liter VW Jetta TDI.

This particular intake is what AFE calls their “Stage 2 Si” or “sealed intake.”  The sealed air box installs cleanly, looks sharp, and is quieter than an open box design diesel cold air intake.

Air flow is increased by a remarkable 56% over the stock air intake system.  Like most AFE intakes, this 2.0L TDI Cold Air Intake comes with your choice of filter media.  This kit comes with either their Pro Dry S filter or their Pro 5R.  The Pro Dry S is made from synthetic material.  100% washable and reusable, it doesn’t require oiling after cleaning, making it a highly convenient choice.  The Pro 5R is also washable and reusable, but the oiled cotton gauze requires oiling after each cleaning.  Flow rates for the Pro 5 R are slightly higher.

2009 VW JETTA TDI Performance Upgrades

2009 VW TDI Performance Upgrades are finally here!  If you’ve been waiting patiently for the chance to modify your 2009 TDI, your wait is over.

True Volkswagen TDI enthusiasts have something to cheer about as new diesel performance parts and Upgrade product releases are here for the 2009 VW Jeta 2.0L TDI Sedan and Wagon. After Volkswagen’s decision not to manufacture 2007 and 2008 VW TDI’S, many TDI enthusiasts have pounced on the chance to buy a factory fresh 2009 TDI Jetta.  With no TDI vehicles coming off the VW assembly line for a few years, manufacturers of VW TDI upgrades had to turn their attention to other product lines.  Now, however, with the popularity of Volkswagen’s new 2009 TDI Jetta’s, upgrade and modification companies have taken note and are again giving car owners the types of Performance products they crave – products that until only recently had been reserved for older model VW TDI’S.

Diesel performance Cold Air Intake Systems and Rapid Power Module’s, or “Chips” as they are often called, are two of the easiest, least expensive, and most effective upgrades you can make to your 2009 TDI Jetta. Diesel engines want cold air to breathe and properly atomized fuel to burn, and an upgraded intake and module will give your TDI just what it needs.  If you are interested in maximizing the full potential of your VW TDI, read on.

To give your Turbo Diesel more cold air, a high-quality choice comes from Advanced Flow Engineering, or AFE Power as they are commonly known. AFE has recently released a Performance Air Intake System for the 2009 Jetta TDI 2.0L with an impressive list of benefits and performance data. The system is 100% bolt-on, mounts to the lower airbox housing, and no drilling or cutting is required. After a simple 15-30 minute installation, you can expect air flow to increase 56% over stock. Horsepower gains average +10 at 3150 RPM, and expect Torque to increase by 23 lbs. at 3050 RPM.  The system comes with a high-efficiency, low restriction air filter in your choice of either a Pro Dry S or a Pro 5R. Most people choose the Pro Dry S for ease of use with filter cleaning being a simple wash and air dry.

Performance diesel parts modules improve TDI fuel economy and provide extra horsepower at the same time by improving the efficiency of the vehicle fuel injection system.  Performance market manufacturer and TDI stalwart Bully Dog now markets a “Rapid Power Performance Module” for the 2009 VW TDI Jetta which effectively improves fuel economy and horsepower. This module is a simple inline, between wiring harness, plug-in chip designed for safe and long-lasting use. It is adjustable on-the-fly, allowing you to choose between three power levels; Stock, +10% and +15% horsepower via a simple toggle switch that can be left in the engine bay or installed within the interior of the vehicle for easy access. The total horsepower increase from this module on the highest setting according to Bully Dog’s Dyno testing is +25HP
and a torque increase of 30 ft-lbs. If you can keep your foot of the gas pedal you should even see some impressive fuel economy gains on a car that already gets remarkable mileage.

Combine the Performance Cold Air Intake System with the Rapid Power Module and you’ll see tremendous gains in horsepower, torque and economy; perhaps most importantly, though, will be the increased fun you’ll have driving your modified 2009 VW Jetta TDI!
