Dr. Performance Is Out Of Business – Now What?

September 26, 2011

Because we still get phone calls every day asking for information about Dr. Performance power modules, we wanted to let you know that they went out of business in the summer of 2011.  Questions we are most often asked include “How do I get warranty work on my Dr. Performance module that I bought a few years ago?” and “Do you know how we can get in contact with Dr. Performance?”  The unfortunate truth is that they are completely out of business, haven’t answered their phone in almost six months, and any repair work on a damaged or faulty Dr. Performance module at this point is impossible.

The most frequent question we hear from customers interested in a diesel performance module next is “Since Dr. Performance modules aren’t available, are there any other manufacturers of diesel power modules?”  Thankfully we can answer in the affirmative that there are several companies that make diesel performance modules that have the same beneficial characteristics that Dr. Performance modules had.  Some of the reasons Dr. Performance modules were so popular included improved power without increased operating temperature, they were great for towing, and they gave substantial diesel fuel mileage improvements.   They were also widely used as a trustworthy pressure box by diesel owners who wanted to “stack chips.” It didn’t hurt that the majority of them didn’t leave a footprint in the vehicle’s ECM because they were simply rail pressure boxes that uninstall quickly and cleanly from the rail pressure sensor harness.

Depending on the diesel truck you drive, we recommend a power module from two different manufacturers.  If you’re looking for improved 6.4L Ford Powerstroke performance, we really like the TS Performance Power Play MP-8.  On the 6.4L Powerstroke, the MP-8 is a fuel pressure only power module that adds up to 100 Horsepower and installs in just minutes by plugging in to a 15 pin fuel sensor connector.   Just like the Dr. Performance module, the Power Play MP-8 doesn’t increase your diesel exhaust temperatures and most users report gains of 2-4 mpg in fuel economy.

TS Performance Power Play MP-8

For common rail owners looking for improved Cummins diesel performance or Duramax diesel performance, the Digi CRBB Power Module from DieselPower has quickly become our favorite choice here at Parleys Diesel Performance.  Backed by an unheard-of 3 year manufacturer warranty and built from some of the best electronic components available, the DieselPower Digi CRBB is easy to install, doesn’t leave a “footprint” in the truck’s computer, can be adjusted quickly to any desired power level, and adds a decent amount of horsepower.

DieselPower Digi CRBB Common Rail Pressure Box

Because the Digi CRBB is a fuel rail pressure module it can be “stacked” with a Smarty programmer on the Dodge Ram Cummins diesels yielding loads of power that you almost have to feel to believe.  Operating temperatures are kept down, and if you don’t drive the truck like you stole it fuel economy can be improved significantly.    The Digi CRBB is also effective for “stacking chips” when using EFI-LIVE tuning on your Chevy or GMC Duramax diesel.  If you have any questions about these or other options for your diesel truck, call us and we’ll be happy to help.

Hypertech Max Energy Review

July 22, 2008

A while back I posted about finally having a chance to try out the Hypertech Max Energy on my 2005 Dodge Cummins.  It had been my habit up until then to try a new diesel performance chip or module every couple of weeks just to be able to offer reviews to you our readers but I must admit that I have enjoyed having the Max Energy on my truck so much that I haven’t had any motivation to take it off and try something else.  I want to start this post off by listing off the pro’s and con’s that I have found with the Hypertech Max Energy tuner:

Pros:

  • Excellent Power Increase – Now although I have not had a chance to dyno my truck with the Max Energy tuner Hypertech does claim an increase of up to 176 hp on the cummins.
  • Tow Safe – One of the best parts about the max energy is the fact that even on the highest power setting (Stage 3) you can tow safely. Now I haven’t had a chance to tow my toy hauler with this module I have towed several loads in my heavy duty dump trailer and have yet to see tempratures raise to an unsafe level.
  • No Smoke – Now I know for some of you that might sound more like a con than a pro but personally because of local authorities I’d rather fly under the radar as much as possible and one thing that helps with that is avoiding the smoke out of the tailpipe.  Also, another interesting thing to note about the lack of smoke, when I had the Diablo Predator Diesel Tuner on my truck it smoked a ton more.  It also had a little more torque on the low end but the same power at freeway speeds.  So it seems to me that Hypertech has done a better job of bleeding every ounce of power out of every molecule of fuel rather than just going the route of dumping as much fuel as possible.
  • Internet Updateable –  You can always get the latest version for your vehicle.
  • Oversized Tire Calibrations – Got oversized tires?  This unit can help!

Cons:

  • Small Screen – As you can see in the picture the screen is clearly smaller than the Superchips Flashpaq Tuner screen.  This is sort of a pain when working with it but makes for a smaller unit when you have to store it in the vehicle.

As you can see I don’t really have many con’s. I have been really pleased with the hypertech max energy, and if you are just looking for economy I would recommend checking out the Hypertech Max Energy E-Con.

How To Increase Diesel Fuel Mileage!

March 27, 2008

As of late we are getting a lot of people asking how to increase diesel fuel mileage.  With diesel over $4.00 a gallon and expected to go well over $5.00 a gallon this summer its no wonder why people are wondering how they can increase diesel fuel mileage.   Here are the things we have found that work best to increase diesel fuel mileage:

Diesel Performance Chip: Using a diesel performance chip is one of the easiest ways to increase your diesel fuel mileage, usually with about ten minutes or so spent installing a “chip”, you can increase your fuel economy by 1-5 MPG.  Some companies have actually released chips dedicated to increasing diesel fuel mileage including the Edge Mileage Max, Hypertech Max Energy and Quadzilla Max Mileage.

Diesel Performance Intake: Usually if you have already added a chip the next best thing to help increase diesel fuel mileage.  Diesel performance intakes allow your engine to breathe easier, which will help increase diesel economy.  You will usually see a 1-4 MPG increase.  Some of the best known performance intake manufacturers are S&B Filters, AFE and Airaid.

Water Methanol Injection: Now most people would recommend going with an exhaust system for your third mod to increase fuel economy.  We have found that when it comes to bang for your buck, the Snow Performance Water Methanol Injection Kits lower exhaust gas tempratures more and increase diesel fuel mileage better than an exhaust system.

If you have any further questions on how to increase diesel fuel mileage please contact us.

Diesel Performance Chips – The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread

December 21, 2007
Diesel performance chips have evolved over the last decade or so that they have been in use, and have vastly gained popularity. The reason for their evolution and following is because the diesel performance chips are able to dramatically increase power and I mean dramatically. There are diesel performance chips that can increase performance as much as 230 horse power and 400 foot pounds of torque. That is almost as much power as some of the diesel trucks come with bone stock. There are three ways that diesel performance chips are able to create power and improve economy. The first way that I will discuss that the diesel performance chips are able to increase power and economy is through duration. Duration means that the injectors are held open longer so that more fuel can be injected into the cylinder. More fuel equals more power. Diesel performance chips that use duration are not a good choice to increase diesel fuel mileage, but it does create large amounts of power. The second way is timing. Timing means that the fuel is injected earlier. Timing when used correctly also adds a great amount of power and adds to economy. The goal of timing on diesel performance chips is to get the fuel in the cylinder at a more efficient time. If that is accomplished then more power is extracted from each molecule of fuel.

The third way that diesel performance chips increase power and economy is through pressure. Pressure means that the fuel rails line pressure is increased, so more fuel is injected which creates more power, but at the same time having more pressure to the fuel when it gets to the injector helps it to create a finer mist or atomize as the fuel exits the several little holes in the injector tip. This improved atomization also helps the fuel to mix better with the air that enters the cylinder and is able to extract more power out of the fuel.

Many of the diesel performance chips, modules, boxes, tuners, and the like use a combination of two of these techniques, and some use all of them. So essentially by adding more fuel and improving the way the engine burns the fuel and especially the increased amount of fuel, the diesel performance chips can dramatically increase power and economy.

Duramax Performance….Jr.

September 17, 2007

So we have some good news and some bad news, which would you like first? Alright, we will get the bad news out of the way first, Parley’s Diesel Performance is sad to announce that GM has sold off their Allison Transmission division. Yup, they recently sold off their commercial and military portion to the Carlyle Group and Onex Corp for 5.6 Billion Dollars. When GM was questioned as to why they were selling it off they said that it was all part of, “supporting [their] heavy investments in new products and technology.”

What kind of new products and technology might you ask?

Well that is where the good news comes in! For those of you out there who have been dreaming of a lighter duty, “hers” Duramax Diesel to match your heavier duty “His” on the driveway, you are in luck. GM has finally announced that they will be releasing a new four valve DOHC Duramax V-8 for pickups with a gross vehicle weight of less than 8,600 pounds and FOR THE HUMMER H2! This Duramax Diesel is going to be a 4.5L and will likely make more than 310hp and 520 ft-lb of torque. So for all of you Duramax Diesel Performance enthusiasts, it looks like you have yet another way to get your fix. The real question is who will be the first to step up to the plate for performance for these lighter duty Duramax Diesels. Will EFI Live be able to take the next step and let people reprogram around regen phases etc.. If you have any input let me know.

TDI Performance Review – Van Aaken Smartbox

September 13, 2007

Parley’s Diesel Performance has great news for all you TDI owners and TDI Performance connoisseurs out there! Van Aaken Technologies has just the product that you have been looking for. If you drive one of the many 1.9L Volkswagen diesels in the U.S. there is no question that you have been in need of a little extra power; sure the economy is great but why not have a little extra power while you are at it right. Van Aaken was kind enough to hook us up with one of their Smartbox TDI performance chips so that we could put it on our project vehicle to test it out. Here is what we think:

tdi_performance_chip.jpg

Why The Van Aaken Smartbox?

  • 10 Minute Install- We have seen some easy installs, but wow, this one is a cinch. Since we made the install video for this tdi performance module we have had customers with no previous mechanic/performance experience reporting that they were able to install their smartbox in 6 minutes. You cant beat 20+hp in 6 minutes.
  • Economy Gains- So if 40-50 MPG wasn’t enough for you how about 1-2 MPG More. In our performance tests with the Van Aaken Smartbox on the rare tank when we could keep our foot off the throttle we were able to see an increase or 1-2 MPG which some might say isn’t huge but when you have a much more enjoyable driving experience the increased diesel fuel mileage is sort of icing on the cake.
  • Quality Product- We were very impressed with the overall quality of the product. The hard resin case of the smartbox is completely weatherproof and very durable.
  • Does NOT Void Warranty- If your vehicle is still under factory warranty all you have to do is take the Van Aaken Smartbox off before going to the dealership and they wont be able to tell that it was ever there, it leaves no footprint or flags in your system to show it was ever there.

Why Not the Van Aaken Smartbox:

  • Who Knows?- It was hard for us to figure out a reason why you wouldn’t want this tdi performance chip. The main reason we could come up with is if you are one of the more “Extreme” TDI Performance Enthusiast then you might be more interested in a more customizable performance upgrade like chipping which requires removing your vehicles ECM and sending it into a shop and getting it back a couple of weeks later and will most likely void your warranty. For some people those things sound like more fun than a 10 Minute Install, but for most of our clients this is the exact product they are looking for.

Diablo Predator Tuner Review

September 12, 2007

A couple of months ago, my boss at Parley’s Diesel Performance asked me to put the Diablo Predator Programmer on my 2005 Dodge Cummins so that we could get some real world test and numbers as far as mileage gains etc.. There had been several of our clients who had purchased this diesel tuner from us and had been reporting increased diesel fuel mileage of anywhere from 1-4 MPG so we wanted to see for ourselves what it could do.

What’s Included:  Here are a couple of pictures of what you will see when you open the Diablo Predator package.  When you first open up the package you will see the Diablo Tuner, as you open it up you will see the Instruction manual as well as a promotional Ruler.

diablo_predator_2.jpgdiablo_predator_1.jpg

Why The Diablo Predator?  A lot of our clients are interested in the Diablo Predator for the following reasons:

  • Economical- Compared to some of the competing diesel programmers like the Bully Dog Triple Dog  priced at $597.99 or the Superchips Flashpaq  priced at $499.99 the Diablo Predator Programmer is a deal at $399.95.
  • Great Performance Gains-  For my applications, 05 Dodge Cummins, there are three performance settings and those are 60hp Tow Setting, 100hp Performance/Economy Setting and 160hp Extreme Performance Setting.  In my opinion its great bang for the buck.
  • Increased Diesel Fuel Mileage-  Like I said earlier we had heard from out clients that they had seen gains of anywhere from 1-5MPG, with my truck I saw about the same range actually, some tanks 1MPG better and some tanks 5MPG better.  It just depended on how I drove it, of course.

Why Not the Diablo Predator?  I have really enjoyed the Diablo Predator during the time I have had it on my truck, how can you not enjoy 60-160 more horsepower right?  The main problem that I have had with the predator is:

  • No Over sized Tire Recalibration on the Cummins- If you drive a Duramax  it’s a different story but I would have liked to be able to recalibrate my speedo to get more accurate fuel mileage etc..
  • No Speed Governor Recalibration-  Who wouldn’t want to go a little faster right?

So in the end I am overall satisfied with the performance and mileage increase for the money with the Diablo Predator Tuner, if you are running oversized tires and have the money you might be better off with something like the Superchips Flashpaq.
